Ever Had an Uncomfortable Feeling Caring For a Resident?

Barbara Braithwaite, Safe Swallowing Team • February 14, 2021

Many times, when assessing a resident, a care worker or nurse will tell me they just have a feeling that something is not quite right when a resident is eating. As we chat further to clarify what their concern may be, sometimes it’s articulated exactly. But sometimes it’s a feeling that can’t be explained specifically.

With their experience of working in aged care for whatever period it may be, they’ve developed a wonderfully beneficial higher faculty of intuition. I would say 99 times out of 100, these ‘feelings’ are completely accurate. Something is just not quite right with the resident’s ability to swallow safely. Intuition is based on a combination of experience and knowledge. The combination of these 2 factors greatly improves the confidence we have in caring for our wonderful elderly population.

I read an interesting article a short while ago by Nick Burnett MD Team Teach Australia & New Zealand about minimising restrictive practices and reducing risk for all in aged care, but of course this can be implemented more widely.
