Knowledge is Power ….

I was speaking to an Aged Care Facility Manager the other day. He was booking in a large number of staff to our Safe Swallowing Education Course. His concern was that perhaps the Course may lead some staff to make decisions beyond their background and knowledge. Information is definitely power, but it is vital that we know our own limits and seek or follow professional advice in all situations where a resident’s wellbeing may be at risk.

Our Safe Swallowing Course most definitely reinforces that staff members follow professional advice or refer the resident for a full swallowing assessment. It arms them with knowing what to look for to make an appropriate referral. The safety of our residents is always first and foremost in our minds.

I read an interesting article a short while ago by Nick Burnett MD Team Teach Australia & New Zealand about minimising restrictive practices and reducing risk for all in aged care, but of course this can be implemented more widely.
