We Can’t Know What We Don’t Know

Working for over 40 years in aged care facilities and with our population with a disability - seeing literally hundreds of residents and the staff who care for them is an absolute honour. Ensuring each resident we see is safe and comfortable eating a diet that is as closely akin to the food they have enjoyed their whole life is a great privilege.

Equally satisfying in my role is to empower nursing and care staff to continue to provide the utmost care and attention to each and every resident they look after. That’s not always an easy task. Most days staff are faced with too many tasks needing to be completed in too few hours.

We have recently had a number of businesses comment on their staff's appreciation of the depth of our Course coming from 40 years of experience in this area. With swallowing issues being in the top 3 causes of death in our elderly and disabled populations, and residents eating and/or drinking at least 5 times a day, in depth, empowering education is our goal.

We know staff turnover is an issue in the care industry and have found that happier, more confident staff leads to happier clients who can enjoy eating and drinking safely. Their relatives can be confident that safety is, of course, a top priority. We're keen to support businesses' goals of providing quality education underlying this goal to help with staff retention.

None of us knows what we don’t know. Taking tailored education aimed at providing, in the most convenient and cost-effective form, information staff may not already know or that may have become buried amongst all the other things they need to know, is an easy course of action. Don’t let a tiny time investment stand in the way of continuing to offer the best care. Swallowing safety is a basic right for all residents.

Organize Safe Swallowing Dysphagia Education for your facility or business. Discounts apply for larger staff numbers.

There are limitless benefits to the rapidly increasing use of technology across all ages. Research into high usage suggests social isolation can be an unwanted ‘side effect’.

I read an interesting article a short while ago by Nick Burnett MD Team Teach Australia & New Zealand about minimising restrictive practices and reducing risk for all in aged care, but of course this can be implemented more widely.
