Something Seemingly Little Can Make a Big Difference

Just this week I chatted to a nurse who had just begun our Safe Swallowing Education Course. She had only done the first small section of the Course but had applied what she’d learnt to a dementia ward mealtime.

One resident was so distracted that she could not be convinced to shift from the couch to the dining table to eat. Another resident couldn’t properly focus on his meal because he kept turning around, away from his food.

The nurse connected the dots and remembered something she had learnt in our Course and, relaying this knowledge to the other staff and applying it, immediately allowed the first resident to easily be assisted to move to her meal and the other to safely focus on eating.

Both staff and residents relaxed, happy and nourished.

I LOVE hearing these stories. A small adjustment benefiting what is a common, and can become a very difficult, situation. Well done to that nurse.

I read an interesting article a short while ago by Nick Burnett MD Team Teach Australia & New Zealand about minimising restrictive practices and reducing risk for all in aged care, but of course this can be implemented more widely.
