Just Saying ‘Thank you’ Doesn’t Seem Enough

Aged Care Employee Day this week reflects how we see those who care for our elderly loved ones. We’re not only speaking of aged care facility residents but also those relatives and friends who are home carers. It’s challenging to think of a way to express our deep gratitude to those at the coal face, day in day out. Theirs is a role that many of us feel we may not handle.

The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety in Australia has highlighted the aged care sector as never before. It’s given us an opportunity to support, not only our residents, but our carers as well. Each situation they deal with can be very fluid; they make decisions every day that others don’t give a second thought to. Seemingly simple activities of showering, meal preparation, ensuring eating and drinking are safe and enjoyable, managing medication, handling the seemingly endless appointments – all in the current environment of lockdowns and hotspots is not something to be taken lightly.

We aim to support our home carers and aged care facility staff by providing straight forward, practical information about one of our most basic needs – eating. Empowering yourself with knowledge about what to look for and how to support safe swallowing in this very special population, is our mission. Thank you for your role.

I read an interesting article a short while ago by Nick Burnett MD Team Teach Australia & New Zealand about minimising restrictive practices and reducing risk for all in aged care, but of course this can be implemented more widely.
