Everyone of Us Swallows – Empower Yourself

Barbara Braithwaite, Safe Swallowing Team • August 4, 2021

As a team, our mission is to support those caring for our ageing population to better understand and manage swallowing difficulties and to easily implement the new food and fluid modifications set out by the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) through understanding Safe Swallowing. We have recently had several disability services also take our Course.

Of course, we all swallow, and the mechanism is the same for all of us when it all functions normally. When things go wrong with that bodily function, we need to seek professional support. If you have even the slightest concern, we always advise having a formal assessment of your swallowing, by a speech pathologist, as a priority.

Our Safe Swallowing Education Course seeks to support and empower you in understanding and managing either yourself or someone you’re caring for who has swallowing issues. Having the background knowledge of how our swallow works and how we can provide the correct support for those we’re caring for, is not only a relief but it also empowers us to safely provide the care we want to provide for those we care for.

I read an interesting article a short while ago by Nick Burnett MD Team Teach Australia & New Zealand about minimising restrictive practices and reducing risk for all in aged care, but of course this can be implemented more widely.
