Empowering healthcare workforce for quality care across Australia

In a significant move toward improving the nation’s healthcare system, the Albanese Government has introduced a new initiative aimed at maximising the potential of healthcare professionals.

“Unleashing the Potential of our Health Workforce Review” seeks to empower healthcare practitioners to deliver top-notch care across the board.

Derived from recommendations put forth by the Strengthening Medicare Taskforce, the review has a clear mission: to explore innovative ways in which healthcare professionals can utilise their full skill sets.

The ultimate goal is to ensure that every Australian, regardless of their location, has access to high-quality healthcare services.

This initiative is particularly promising for individuals residing in rural, remote, and underserved areas, as the review’s outcomes are expected to bridge gaps in healthcare accessibility and equity across communities.

Steering this crucial undertaking is the accomplished Professor Mark Cormack, a veteran in the healthcare field. With a wealth of experience spanning various healthcare roles, Professor Cormack’s leadership promises a comprehensive and insightful review.

Collaboration will be at the heart of this endeavour, as the review is set to involve extensive engagement with stakeholders from different states and territories. The aim is to finalise the review by the middle of 2024, with updates and findings shared periodically to ensure transparency and progress.

Professor Cormack’s deep understanding of healthcare dynamics, derived from his diverse roles, including executive positions and teaching, uniquely positions him to guide this endeavour toward success.

Minister for Health and Aged Care Mark Butler emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting healthcare workers in delivering their best efforts. He said, “The review will focus on the immediate benefits of supporting more quality service delivery in, and greater accessibility to primary care which will benefit all Australians.”

The scope of this review encompasses not only medical practitioners but also other healthcare professionals like pharmacists, as a cohesive team effort is deemed vital for a comprehensive healthcare enhancement strategy.

There are limitless benefits to the rapidly increasing use of technology across all ages. Research into high usage suggests social isolation can be an unwanted ‘side effect’.

I read an interesting article a short while ago by Nick Burnett MD Team Teach Australia & New Zealand about minimising restrictive practices and reducing risk for all in aged care, but of course this can be implemented more widely.
