We Don’t Know What We Don’t Know

Working for over 40 years in aged care facilities and seeing literally hundreds of residents and the staff who care for them is an absolute joy. Ensuring the resident is safe and comfortable eating a diet that is as closely akin to the food they have enjoyed their whole life is a great privilege.

Equally satisfying in my role is to empower nursing and care staff to continue to provide the utmost care and attention to each and every resident they look after. That’s not always an easy task. Most days they are faced with too many tasks needing to be completed in too few hours.

None of us knows what we don’t know. Taking tailored education aimed at providing, in the most convenient and cost effective form, information you or your staff may not already know or that may have become buried amongst all the other things you need to know, is an easy course of action. Don’t let a tiny time investment stand in the way of continuing to offer the best care. Swallowing safety is a basic right for all residents. I read an interesting article a short while ago by Nick Burnett MD Team Teach Australia & New Zealand about minimising restrictive practices and reducing risk for all in aged care, but of course this can be implemented more widely.
