My Mother Used to Say....

Barbara Braithwaite, Safe Swallowing Team • October 23, 2020

My Mother used to say, ‘When you go grey, you become invisible.’ She felt the value and presence of our ageing generation diminished as you grew older. That was nearly a decade ago now, but I think things have changed since then. The older generation is far more in the spotlight now, with a large focus on aged care. We’ve become increasingly aware of the wonderful initiatives being implemented in our aged care facilities, not only to ensure their safety but also that their quality of life continues and their value is recognised. I see wonderful stories of the incredible obstacles our elderly has overcome and their wise advice to the younger generation. Whether we’re an aged care worker, relative or friend, we want to convey our appreciation to them. They haven’t disappeared in our eyes.

I read an interesting article a short while ago by Nick Burnett MD Team Teach Australia & New Zealand about minimising restrictive practices and reducing risk for all in aged care, but of course this can be implemented more widely.
