BENEFITS TO BUSINESSES FROM OVER 40 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN DYSPHAGIA

Barbara Braithwaite, Safe Swallowing Team • January 13, 2023

As an employer of aged care and disability staff and carers, how would it benefit you if 40 years of experience could accompany each of your staff in their caring role? What if that vital, lifesaving knowledge could accompany each of your staff in their daily tasks?

Certainly, the residents in your care would be safer and more comfortable in eating, drinking and taking their medicines. Their risk of choking or developing aspiration pneumonia due to an unrecognized swallowing issue, would be reduced. Of course, your duty of care and compliance for accreditation would also be covered.

But what about your staff?

Do they view you as an ‘Employer of Choice’?

Do they feel supported in their role?

Do they feel unsure of how to identify and manage someone with a potential swallowing issue?

Do they know how to respond to a relative’s insistence on bringing unsuitable food from home for the resident?

Can they be as productive as they want to be if there are areas of the basics that we take for granted, such as eating and drinking, if they’re unsure of what a simple cough may mean?

You can easily become an ‘Employer of Choice’ where staff feel supported and valued in their role. Providing them with the knowledge they need regarding the very basics of care – eating and drinking safely.

Talk to us about how we can help you retain your valuable staff.

There are limitless benefits to the rapidly increasing use of technology across all ages. Research into high usage suggests social isolation can be an unwanted ‘side effect’.

I read an interesting article a short while ago by Nick Burnett MD Team Teach Australia & New Zealand about minimising restrictive practices and reducing risk for all in aged care, but of course this can be implemented more widely.
